I spam, I perve, I bitch. Occasionally, I also take photos. I don't know what I want, but I know I want it now.
I don't tag much, but when I do:
"I waited too long to read the sequel, and now I can’t even remember the characters."
A novel by me
"I read the whole series in less than two days, and now can’t separate the events of individual books" the thrilling sequel
"I’ve read so much fanfic for this series, I can’t remember what really happened in the books" the stunning conclusion
In a text post, list ten FICS that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” works, or even all the same pairing or fandom, just the fics that have touched you or that stuck with you somehow.
Tag ten friends, including me, so I’ll see your list. Make sure you let your friends know you’ve tagged them!
I did actually spend a bit of time on this, because it’s hard to track down old fics, hey. These are stories that left deep impressions on me (in writing, premise, presentation, stage of my life, etc…) and that I might dig up every now and then to reread. I am sorry but not sorry that all(-ish) of these contain male/male relationships; I have been rotten for too long to change now, haha. In no particular order:
1. Ten Thousand Stitches Crossed, by kay-cricketed
Hetalia, PG-13, America/England
Summary: [Prompt: America ruining his clothes as an excuse to get England to sew them.] America does whatever it takes to get closer to England. His wardrobe is just a small sacrifice to make, that’s all.
There’s pining and sorrow and lovely, lovely turns of phrase about wanting to get closer to a beloved.
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Mature, Xanxus/fem!Tsuna
Summary: Iemitsu’s daughter comes to Italy when she is eleven. The ninth has had a bad spell with his heart and Xanxus’s inheritance seems closer than ever. The Outside Adviser wants his daughter close to him in this time of danger- and though no one mentions it, she’s also there as a comfort to the old man in his dying years.
Half_sleeping’s genderbends are a thing of beauty and shoujo manga. Like a stalker, I followed her from LJ to DW/Tumblr/AO3. Her dialogues/scenarios are sharp and funny, especially now in series like Kuroko no Basuke. Her KHR! fics remain close to my heart as the stuff that would make me itch to draw fanart for.
Inception, Mature, Eames/Arthur
Summary: Thinking that a reporter genuinely likes you is pretty much on par with feeling like you really are special to that stripper.
I cackle gleefully whenever I reread this, and spurred me to check out Overheard in the Newsroom. The characters feel recognisable in their roles, and there is just so much to love about this fic.
4. Reconstruction, by rageprufrock
Captain America (movies), Teen+, Bucky/fem!Steve
Summary: In which Stephanie Rogers is the complicating element in the sweeping romance of Bucky Barnes and Lady Liberty.
Rageprufrock has a way with using various voices, formats, and real life references to tell a story, and this WIP is an excellent example of her range. There is such great tenderness in the way the characters act while in thought of each other.
5. The Professor’s Wife, by foolish_mortal
xxxHolic, Teen+, Doumeki/Watanuki
Summary: The students all said that Professor Doumeki had a wife who made him lunches and impeccably pressed his shirts. Watanuki found this hilarious. For the wtfholic fest prompt: “The only people who can see Watanuki are customers with wishes.”
I love how the unwitting domesticity of their relationship developed into their adult lives, and the understated affection between them, despite frustrations.
6. Sand Castle, by metisket
D.Gray-man, Teen+, Cross & Allen
Summary: Cross Marian’s guide to raising strange children.
The kid turned twelve, and Cross went ahead and made him an official apprentice. It felt a lot like resigning himself to his fate.
The kid, who was getting more uppity every day, asked if this made him the official slave, rather than the unofficial slave.
Cross shoved him off a balcony to check his reaction time. Pretty good, actually.
How do I put this… Allen was the sort of lovely child who needed the callousness of Cross to become tough enough to face the world as he does in the series, and it’s kinda great to see how that came about.
Naruto, Explicit, Kakashi/Iruka
Summary: The first time Iruka met Hatake Kakashi, he was still on some pretty good painkillers.
This is a nice way to insert some domesticity into the lives of characters who are otherwise living alone, I think (Naruto especially.) Having it set against the events of the series grounds it well.
8. Chiaroscuro, by silverr
Saint Seiya, Teen+, Saga & Kanon & Shion
Summary: Kanon and Shion encounter Saga’s dark half. ** Gemini backstory and alternate history drawn from canon. Rated for implied twincest and seduction.
In part because the English-speaking fandom is so tiny, it’s great to find well-written, interesting fics that not only understand the series, but are also able to build off of it.
9. Hyotei Roommates Arc, by Monnie@Sins of Will
Prince of Tennis, Teen+~Explicit, Various pairings
This is a tough series to link because the individual stories, one-shots, and spin-offs aren’t tagged (and I’m not even sure if half of it is available on the LJ anymore). This was one of my early fandom loves, and while the writing can be quite wordy, the images that come to mind are vividly beautiful.
10. Alice, by Mami
Weiß Kreuz, R, Schuldich/Ken
Summary:Through the looking glass and into the fire. Ken wakes up to find out his life could have been different, cleaner. Only how clean is it, and will it be worth the past he knows to live in this future.
God bless Angelfire for still kicking around. This is something of an old favourite, because despite being a terrible, terrible series, WK spawned some really great fics back in the day. The fic presents many interesting conflicts to be resolved, by virtue of being almost an AU.
